Ermita de Sant Domènec de Guzman

The Sant Domènec de Guzmán Chapel is located next to El Museu Etnològic (The Ethnological Museum) in Xaló. It was built between 1691 and 1697, and was inaugurated on the 2nd of February, 1699.

For a time it served the dual function as both a chapel and a school and, throughout its history, it has experienced periods of splendour and abandonment, due to which it had to be restored on several occasions, most importantly the renovations carried out in 1884 and 1971.

It is a building with a neo-Gothic air, with high, plastered, painted walls and covered by a gabled roof. In front is a lower atrium, with an independent single-sided sloping roof. On the front façade there is a central entrance with a pointed arch and a window on each side in the same style, all of which are latticed. The building is topped by a triangular pediment, which is crowned by a neoclassical bell tower and ultimately by a radiant cross with a bell, on which is written: "Costejada pel poble. Xaló Any 1941" (Paid for by the people of the town. Xaló 1941).

The door of the chapel opens in a semicircular fashion and has low windows on both sides. Above it there is a niche occupied by a small image of the saint, and there are also two ceramic altarpieces with the name of the chapel and a reminder of its restoration in 1978.

The nave is rectangular, with a barrel vault and divided into three sections by arches that start from pilasters. On each side there is a series of openings under semicircular arches which, like chapels, house different religious images. At the back, the sacristy is accessed from the left side of the chancel. Above the altar, at the front, there is a Baroque-style altarpiece with golden tones depicting an image of Sant Domènec de Guzmán.
