The riuraus are constructions that appeared in the Valencian area during the 18th century. They are linked to the boom period of the production of raisins, which occurred mostly during the 19th century, which was also a period of general economic growth. This construction was an essential element during the traditional process of making raisins. The function of these buildings was to serve as a shelter for the “canyissos” (the trays made out of reeds upon which the grapes were spread out so as to dry) whenever the rain or the night dew threatened to wet the grapes and make them rot.
Risau is how the riuraus are called in Gata. This walk is an itinerary covering 12 km with a low difficulty level, during which you can contemplate twenty riuraus, muscatel vineyard terraces and other of the town's points of interest.
