During the years between 1820 and 1840, Ondara transitioned from a place of traditional agriculture to one of commercial farming, one in which the vineyard occupied two thirds of the cultivated area and the income from the export of raisins was the lifeblood that modernised the economic, social, demographic and urban life of the town.
Ondara lies within the so-called Ruta dels Riuraus, a route that runs through some of the riuraus of the area, combining rural roads and the town’s urban centre. Apart from seeing riuraus, one can appreciate magnificent country houses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, constructed by the local bourgeoisie, as well as interesting buildings such as water mills.
