El Poble Nou de Benitatxell
“El Portalet” is the name given to the door that opens onto the square known as Plaça de l’Església, from its posterior side. It constitutes a second access to the square, along with the street called Carrer de l’Església.
This door was one of the accesses to the walled centre upon which the first town was built, around the church. In mediaeval times, the space was an enclosure made by the higher slopes of the land, the walls of the temple and the back of the houses.
If one goes through El Portalet from the square, one finds a stunning viewpoint from where El Montgó, the cape of Sant Antoni, the bay of Xàbia and the mountain ridges that rise to the peak known as Puig Llorença can be seen.
