Castell de Castells
This proposal offers an opportunity to explore Castell de Castells and observe varying flora species in each corner. Furthermore, visitors may explore the 'Jardín rebrotador del Llavador y camino de las Huertas' which showcases a diverse range of planted species. The CEIP La Serrella students have established this garden to cultivate a seed repository of resilient native species capable of withstanding large-scale fires like the one that occurred in Castell de Castells in August 2022, caused by a lightning strike during a dry storm in Vall d'Ebo, which devastated 13,000 hectares.
Our walk commences at the Bota fountain, located at the river Castells bed, which was ultimately named the Xaló or Gorgos river. Adjacent to the riverbed, there is an array of characteristic riverside flora, inclusive of reeds, elms, lichens, and water flora. We will traverse Sant Roc street to cross the village, observing the variety of plants that the community nurtures to adorn the streets and balconies. Here, we can appreciate an array of flora, including geraniums, jasmines, reeds, as well as aromatic plants like incense and basil, and perhaps even some indigenous wild plants. As we approach the urban centre, we will also note the cypresses, which serve as markers denoting the location of the historical Calvary and cemetery.
To complete this tour, we will explore the Llavador and Old Hortetes Path. Here we can witness the remnants of an aqueduct and pond, previously utilised to irrigate vegetable gardens. Additionally, we can observe the various species present in a resprouting garden, including native flora. To enhance your experience, QR codes are available for further information.
