La Vall de Gallinera
One of the most well-known springs in La Vall de Gallinera is the source known as La Font de La Mata de Benirrama, located in one of the shadiest places in the valley. This beautiful place is the manifestation of a type of nature which is still wild, only slightly tamed by humans. It is located at a distance of about 400 metres from the county road that runs through the entire valley, more or less in front of the ancient Benirrama rock paintings on the other side of the valley which were partly stolen in 1993.
The site offers a recreational space with a spectacular rustic fountain that has two spouts and a trough, some irrigation ponds and also a washing place. At the same time, another source, called L'Ullal de La Mata, springs up independently just a few steps away from the aforementioned fountain, with the appearance of a well.
At the other end of the valley, in Benissili, there is another source also called La Font de La Mata. This spring would have, in the past, supplied water to the abandoned settlement known as La Solana de Benissili, located just 170 metres away. Behind the fountain are some walls which face towards the ravine, also made using the dry stone technique, with an alcove that returns the excess water to the ravine. The esplanade where the fountain is located is known as El Planet de la Font de la Mata. This is where the conflicts that arose between the people of the area were discussed, or where accounts were settled.
Both springs owe their name to the mastic plant. This is possibly the plant toponym which was most used when naming springs.
