The Church of Santa Maria is located in the main square of Xaló. The current temple, dedicated to La Mare de Déu Pobra, was completed in 1831 and is built in a neoclassical style, with a Latin cross plan and an octagonal tower.

On the exterior, the main façade has a single level, with a simple rectangular frame that highlights four Doric pilasters framing the entrance door. On one side of the main elevation, there is a three-story tower with a polygonal base, topped by two cylindrical volumes. The building is a single-nave structure with a Latin cross inscribed in a rectangle. The central nave is covered with a barrel vault supported by transverse arches, while the side chapels have ribbed vaults.

The interior elevation features classical elements, including a powerful entablature that runs throughout the space. A giant order with volutes and a smaller Tuscan order measures the central and lateral naves, respectively. The space is illuminated by semi-circular spaces that are reflected on the exterior.

As an interesting fact, a farmer named Ti Canet discovered the image of La Mare de Déu Pobra, the patron saint of the church and the municipality, in 1731 in the Benibrai area, buried inside a wooden box and in a very degraded state, which gave the image its name.
