El Poble Nou de Benitatxell
Cova del Moraig is a cave that is considered to be one of the best examples of drainage of a karstic system, which has gone from continental or coastal conditions to underwater conditions. This karstic cavity, initially developed under subaerial conditions, was flooded during the last rise in sea level (approximately 6,000 years ago).
The erosive action of the waves and the dissolution of seawater on the limestone rocks have given rise to the current image of this unique cave. Nowadays, it is an emblematic icon of the Valencian coast due to the fact that from its interior, during days when the sea is calm, one can see light entering through two large arches and an upper hole.
Also known as Cova dels Arcs, this cave served in ancient times as a refuge for sailors and as a water supply for the local population, among other uses.
