La Casa Nova is a fortified farmhouse of historical and architectural interest in which the living and working areas are integrated (winery, oil mill, corrals and stables). Probably built at the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century, the building is a visual and scenic zone that dominates most of the municipal area. (1)
The Abargues family built a new house, designing spacious and comfortable rooms for the daily life of their noble status, with the corrals, threshing floors, barns, chambers, cisterns and cellars necessary to integrate a centre of production and storage of fruits, and with enough space to permanently house guards, workers, shepherds and servants. The ideal location had to be a place with a lookout position that would allow for the best maritime sightings and contact with the guard points of the coast, close to their territorial properties, and far enough from the impoverished reality that existed inside the walled fortification of the town and its inhabitants.
The building of the manor house brought together architectural characteristics similar to those of its place of origin (this point would explain the singularity of the factory), with all the necessary defense elements needed so as to effectively repel any external aggression.
Due to the new ranks introduced with their irruption onto Calp’s social and administrative scene at that time, the positions of bailiff and judge of Calp, coastguards and members of the Holy Inquisition, were given to some of the highest representatives of the family.
