Sorbus aria

Family: Rosaceae

Genus: Sorbus

Common name: Moixera. Apple tree edge.

Flowering time: May to June.

Life forms: Deciduous (Caducifoli). Macrophanerophyte (Macrofaneròfit).

Habitats: Rock crevices and cliffs.

Features: Sorbus aria is a tree that can reach fifteen metres in height in very favourable sites. It has a shrubby rather than arboreal habitat and is always found in the crevices of shady rock faces. It is a remnant of the deciduous forest that once covered the sierras and has now disappeared, replaced by Mediterranean evergreen woods. Sorbus aria has rather large leaves (up to 12 cm) with a serrated edge and a whitish underside. It produces showy inflorescences with many white flowers grouped in a false umbel. It flowers in late spring.
