The natural port of Dénia determined the location of the first settlements: the Roman Dianium, the Muslim Daniya and the current city were all built looking for that connection to the sea. The port of Dénia was the nerve centre for the export of raisins during the 19th and 20th centuries, and influences from those times can still be found today in the urban landscape and the maritime façade.
This walk follows the route that the carts full of raisins used to take when they got to Dénia. They transported the raisins to the warehouses of the trading companies, many of which still exist today and nowadays house shops and restaurants. In the area of “El moll del martell” take “La Panseta”, just like the sailboats that used to transport merchandise and passengers to the large ships which, due to their deep draft, would dock in the middle of the port. These ships then set sail, full of raisins, to ports around the world such as London, New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, Marseille, Algeria...
